If you are currently reading this on your Android-based smartphone and scowling at its slow performance, the new LG Optimus 2X might stir your heart.

It's the first Android-based smartphone to be powered by a dual-core processor (1GHz NVIDIA Tegra 2 Dual Core). The zippy 2X can record and play full high-definition videos at 1080p. It has an 8-megapixel autofocus camera with LED flash, and a 1.3-megapixel front-facing camera. It runs on version 2.2 of the Android mobile operating system (OS) and can be connected to your HDTV via an HDMI cable to view your phone's contents on a large display instead of its four-inch screen.

The Optimus 2X was unveiled earlier today, together with the LG Optimus Black - a svelte Android smartphone only 9.2mm thick.

The LG Optimus 2X ($888) will be available here later this month, while the LG Optimus Black ($768) is coming next month. Both models will be upgradeable to version 2.3 (Gingerbread) of the Android mobile OS, according to LG.
