Imagine the convenience of taking the JBL On Stage IIIP speaker dock on the road or enjoying the sound right at your desktop. Connected to your iPod or iPhone, MP3 player, or other music source, it produces clean, powerful sound--while also charging your iPod or iPhone. With the help of the IR remote, you can take complete control of your music with the JBL On Stage IIIP loudspeaker dock.
Enjoy your iPod or iPhone, view photos or videos, and listen to virtually any other auxiliary audio component, all through the JBL On Stage IIP system.
Combines many proprietary technologies to provide the highest-quality sound, astonishing bass, and clear and accurate audio from any direction.
Compatible with dockable versions of the iPod, including the iPod touch, iPhone, iPod classic 6G, and iPod nano 3G.

Which Dock Is for You?
JBL has been in the iPod dock business for a while, so it's no surprise that the company has crafted enough models to keep up with an ever-increasing army of iPod owners. Which one is right for you? Well, that depends on what kind of pod person you are:
For the Power Hungry
For those who seek more volume, the On Stage 400ID should be your first stop. At 2x15 watts, it's the loudest and largest of the bunch, and features an Atlas woofer for added bass. But size isn't everything--the On Stage Micro boasts the same wattage rating without the woofer.

For the Weekend Warriors
Those who need a dock that they can take anywhere should investigate docks that can be powered by batteries. The On Stage Micro runs on four AAAs, whereas the On Stage IIIP and On Stage III run on six. Take your music to the beach, on camping trips, or wherever you can't bear to be without it.

For the iPhone Techies
The iPhone owner has a couple choices--if you can stand to put the thing down. The On Stage IIIP provides a smaller and more portable option, or the On Stage 200ID gives a bit more power. These two docks support all docking iPod models as well.

For the Featurephiles or Heavy Sleepers
Some of us just aren't content with basic functionality; we need more buttons and more lights. Others just need a little nudge to wake up in the morning. If this is you, then the On Time 200ID and 400IHD are for you. Both feature an alarm clock and AM/FM radio, with the ability to wake up to your favorite song stored on your iPod (and then reject it with the snooze button). Of course, for the masochists, a classic buzzer is also available. The On Time 400IHD adds a dual alarm clock and HD radio to the mix, for a crystal-clear signal and a variety of text-based information (artist name, song title, weather alerts, school closings, etc.) scrolled across your screen.

Something for Everyone
All of these models feature a remote control for full iPod navigation, Evercharge topology to charge your iPod even when it's not connected to a PC or the system is turned off, a mini-jack for auxiliary devices, and the sleek design and solid performance you'd expect from JBL.

Compatibility
The JBL On Stage IIIP system is compatible with docking versions of the iPod, including the iPod touch, iPhone, iPod classic, and iPod nano 3G. A stereo mini jack connection also allows you to enjoy high-quality audio from a variety of other devices such as MP3 and CD players, desktop computers (all platforms), satellite radios, and laptops. Specific dockable iPod compatibility: iPod mini 1G; iPod nano 1G, 2G, 3G; iPod 3G, 4G, 5G, 5.5G, 6G; iPod touch; iPhone.
Easy-to-Use Music and Navigation Controls
Just a touch of the music controls increases or decreases the volume. Using the navigation controls, browse songs, playlists, and photos; change tracks and settings; and more.
Connection Versatility
The JBL On Stage IIIP loudspeaker dock is a multimedia focal point. Enjoy your iPod, view photos or videos, and listen to virtually any other auxiliary audio component, all through the JBL On Stage IIIP system.
Additional Features

  • IR remote--The JBL On Stage IIIP IR remote has several modes of operation. The Music mode allows you to control the volume, change tracks, fast forward, and fast reverse. The Navigation mode allows you to access menus on your mobile digital device just as if you were controlling the unit itself. You can search your music, watch your slideshows, and find and play your videos.
  • Evercharge topology--The system charges your iPod/iPhone, even when it's not connected to a computer or if the system is off.
Advanced Technology
The JBL On Stage IIIP loudspeaker dock combines many proprietary technologies to provide the highest-quality sound, astonishing bass, and clear and accurate audio from any direction.
  • Odyssey transducers--The Odyssey drivers deliver accurate high frequencies while capable of low-frequency extension of four octaves, unlike traditional powered tweeters. This design provides a full, rich frequency response, from low bass to the highest highs.
  • Slipstream port design--The port minimizes boundary layer separation, producing high-output bass with low distortion.
  • COE (computer-optimized equalization)--The system equalization is computer-optimized to provide a rich, complete soundstage over a range of listening positions.
  • OCT (optimized compression topology)--The proprietary compression technology ensures clean, accurate sound at high output levels.
  • AEMS (advanced energy management system)--The automatic battery-saving shutoff will automatically put the system into sleep mode when there is no audio input. The system awakens with just a touch and resumes at the same volume level.
  • Battery-powered--The JBL On Stage IIIP system uses most types of AA batteries. Six fresh AA batteries allow up to 12 hours of continuous play at normal listening levels. An amber LED flashes when the battery protection circuit senses that the batteries are low. JBL encourages the use of rechargeable batteries (e.g., NiMH), to reduce waste and help the environment.
What's in the Box
JBL On Stage IIIP (Black), IR remote control, auxiliary audio input cable, power supply and cord, and adapters for iPod and iPhone.

  • Supports most iPhone and iPod models with Universal Dock Connector
  • 3.5-mm mini jack allows connection of other audio devices such as MP3 and CD players, desktop computers, satellite radios, and laptops

Webcam review: IPEVO Point 2 View USB Document Camera

    by May Chua
    04:46 AM Apr 01, 2011

The IPEVO Point 2 View USB Document Camera certainly lives up to its name. It is flexible so you can manipulate it to point at anything you want to show your video conference partner.

The camera swivels and tilts freely, whether it's mounted on the provided clip or weighted stand. The multi-jointed stand has an adjustable arm which provides a great amount of flexibility in angles. You can also detach it from the stand to approach the subject: The camera's macro mode lets you get as close as 5cm from the subject.

Getting started is easy. You just install the software using the CD provided, mount the camera and connect it via USB to your computer. The webcam doesn't come with a built-in microphone, so you will have to rely on your computer's microphone or purchase one separately.

The interface is straightforward enough: A screen shows what's on-camera, and buttons which allow you to take stills and adjust settings such as digital zoom (up to three times) and exposure.

Given enough lighting, the Point 2 View's 2-megapixel resolution displays sharp and crisp images, even in full-screen view. Its autofocus lens is quick and accurate for most of the time. Some noise appears in the video feed under dim lighting or at night, but the quality is decent enough for you to even read text off a printed page.

But here are a few small gripes: We wish there was a button on the camera to control the digital zoom, instead of having to rely on the on-screen buttons. There is a snapshot button on the camera, but it didn't work on our review unit. The clip also does not sit securely on my monitor - perhaps it was made for thicker displays. However, we've no real complaints overall.

The IPEVO Point 2 View USB Document Camera retails at S$99, and is compatible with both Mac and Windows.

Which of these compact cameras will make you the envy of your friends?

    by Trevor Tan

    04:46 AM Apr 01, 2011

    Intuitive, fast and sleek

Olympus has sounded its advanced-digital-compact camera battle cry with the XZ-1, on the backs of other successful cameras such as the Panasonic Lumix LX5 and Canon's Powershot S95.

Armed with a 10-megapixel high-sensitivity image sensor, a bright 4x (28-112mm equivalent of 35mm) i.Zuiko optical zoom lens and a three-inch LCD screen, the XZ-1 is about the size of an iPhone 4 (albeit 4.6 times thicker) and weighs a mere 275g.

Its "bright" lens allows more light to enter through its large aperture. Its f1.8-2.5 lens is one of the brightest on a digital compact camera in the market currently.

At first glance, the black XZ-1 (also available in white) bears a striking resemblance to the Canon S95, with its simple angular design. However, Olympus' offering has an accessory port above its display that allows you to mount the VF-2 electronic viewfinder or an external flash.

We wish the XZ-1 hadn't borrowed the detachable lens cap design from Panasonic's LX5. But thankfully, unlike the LX5, it automatically pops out when you switch the XZ-1.

Button placement is great, with the mode dial, shutter button, zoom ring, dedicated video record button and a rear wheel dial within easy reach of your right index finger and thumb. There is also an adjustment ring around the lens, for aperture adjustment in aperture-priority mode; or other settings in other modes.

As a result, the handling of this camera is generally superb and properly intuitive. If I had to nitpick, I'd argue that there should be a dedicated white balance and ISO button.

Startup takes around 1.2 seconds while shutting down clocks in at two seconds. Auto-focusing speed is generally fast with almost instantaneous lock-onto focus in good lighting conditions. In darker conditions, the XZ-1 uses its AF illuminator to hasten the focusing speed, taking slightly less than two seconds to get a sharp focus.

Using the Zuiko-class lens found in Olympus DSLRs, the image quality of the XZ-1 is exemplary for its class with sharp rendition of pixels. Its colours are vivid with smooth gradation of tones, while its Auto white balance didn't fail me.

For best results, shoot in ISO 100 as the images are almost flawless. At ISO 200 and 400, you can hardly spot any noise. Noise artifacts only appear from ISO 800. At ISO 1600 and above, chromatic noise becomes readily evident. For more noise control, shoot in RAW.

On the downside, the 720p high-definition video quality of the XZ-1 is not that sharp and picks up a big chunk of ambient sound. But you can get around it by shooting with Art Filters for more interesting results.

In terms of image quality, the XZ-1 is definitely top of the class. At S$748, this compact camera is affordable, yet delivers professional images.

    Birth of a cult classic

The Fujifilm FinePix X100 is not your typical camera. It's not exactly a compact camera, neither is it a digital single lens reflex (DSLR) nor a mirrorless interchangeable lens camera. The closest description is it's a digital version of cult favourite, Konica Hexar.

It has a fixed 23mm lens (equivalent to 35mm due to the sensor's crop factor) and a 12.3-megapixel APS-C CMOS sensor (found in DSLRs) in a rangefinder-like magnesium alloy body with a leather finish.

The button layout may take some getting used to, with the shutter release, On/Off lever, exposure compensation and shutter speed dials located on top. An aperture ring sits around its lens, and a sharp 2.8-inch display with wheel dial and menu and display buttons can be found on its back.

At first try, I couldn't find out how to switch between shooting still images and videos. After some fiddling, I realised you have to press the top of the wheel dial to bring up the menu to change the shoot mode.

The Function button, located near the shutter release, is a nice touch. You can customise it to a setting of your choice: I set it to change the ISO since there isn't a dedicated button for that.

But the most impressive is X100's revolutionary hybrid viewfinder that switches between being an optical viewfinder (OVF) and electronic viewfinder (EVF). Just push a front lever to toggle seamlessly between the two.

You can choose to shoot with various Fujifilm "films" such as the Standard Provia, Vivid Velvia or Soft Astia. Regardless of which "film" you choose, the image quality is the best I have seen so far among all the cameras I have reviewed.

Pixel rendition is sharp with vivid colours. It feels like you are viewing a full high-definition (HD) television when you view X100's images.

White balance is spot on, and noise performance is simply breathtaking. The 720p HD videos captured are equally sharp but, as with most digital cameras, it picks up a good chunk of ambient noise.

The built of the camera is sturdy and has a comfortable grip.

With a price tag of S$1,699, you can see it as an upmarket compact camera or a cheap Leica. But either way, the Fujifilm FinePix X100 will become a cult classic with its retro looks, wonderful handling and superior image quality.

What does your choice of smartphone say about you?

What does your choice of smartphone say about you?

Your smartphone can be an extension of your personality

    by May Chua
    04:46 AM Mar 25, 2011

Can't decide between an iPhone, Blackberry, Android or others? I never thought my choice of operating system (OS) would have much of an impact on my life.

    I couldn't be more wrong.

Things were different when operating systems were only for desktops and laptops. The de-facto PC operating system was Windows and, if you had wanted something else - whether for self-expression or user experience, or both - you'd splash out on a Macintosh. Whether you're a Windows or Mac user didn't mean much to anyone except geeks, who would give personalities to the different OS (did you notice only the good guys on 24 used Macs?). Also Mac users tend to come from the creative industry.

Today, your choice of a smartphone, and, by extension, its mobile OS is
a lot more telling than in the Windows versus Mac days of old. It can even highlight certain characteristics and behaviour of yours - affecting your way of life in small but significant ways. I see this in my friends, colleagues and family: Most of them own Android phones, iPhones or Blackberrys.

And they each have different motivations for choosing their mobile OS.

Why get an iPhone? The answer is a simple and unanimous "It's nice!" or "It's cool". iPhone users want to be seen as part of the "in" crowd, since all the cool kids own one - as does everyone else.

Android smartphone owners don't, and aren't afraid to show it. My Blackberry friends joined the ranks because they liked staying in touch with friends or long-distance boyfriends through Blackberry Messenger (BBM).

Me, I got an Android phone because I wanted to buck the trend of the iPhone. "No thanks," I said, "I want something different!" Ironically, Android has since taken over the biggest market share in America, according to comScore's January figures. And many have commented that my handset looks much like an iPhone. Oh well. Good thing I still have the adorable robot mascot and its open source platform to get me by.

Which smartphone we choose also influences how things unfold whenever the my-phone-is-better-than-yours conversation pops up.

iPhone owners sniff at their Android-loving peers' "less-than-aesthetically-pleasing" or iPhone-lookalike phones, but the tables turn when the battery runs low or calls drop. Blackberry users smirk when they see others struggling with their onscreen keyboards.

With a smartphone in hand, I often have difficulty focusing on what's happening around me and sometimes, even the person or persons I am with at the moment. Your choice of mobile OS will impact how you're distracted too.

People with iPhones sometimes seem to be surgically attached to their devices, and you can't blame them; quality aside, the sheer amount of apps available in the AppStore alone trumps the Blackberry App World and Android market. But even though the Android market offers a fraction of the apps in the AppStore, Android users are sometimes not much better than their iPhone-wielding rivals, glued to their free copy of Angry Birds.

Blackberry owners can only blame BBM for making them anti-social (to the person they're with, not the one they are messaging).

The faults and triumphs of the mobile OS have crept into our way of life, so much so that I can guess, quite accurately, which smartphone someone is using, just with some simple observations.

If the messages you get are often fraught with puzzling words, you are likely dealing with an iPhone user struggling with its autocorrect function. Short replies and numerous typos? The signs point to an Android device and its oft-lamented virtual keyboard. Full sentences and longer messages are indicative of a Blackberry phone armed with a QWERTY keyboard.

Additionally, Blackberry users are less often seen lugging their chargers around, unlike their iPhone and Android counterparts who are in need of some emergency juice ever so often.

Indeed, the smartphone OS can affect your way of life - and since many of us are deeply entrenched in our own camp, we would live with the consequences of our choice.

If not, we can always join the masses and get an iPhone. May Chua

    Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc.

Dream come true for gadget geeks

    by Trevor Tan
    04:46 AM Mar 25, 2011

The dream of combining a smartphone with PlayStation Portable (PSP) capabilities is now a reality.

The Sony Ericsson Xperia Play is a great Android 2.3 (Gingerbread) smartphone with a 5.1-megapixel camera, 4-inch touch screen and provides an array of Android applications for your daily work functions.

But slide out the gaming pad with its PSP-like buttons, and Play immediately transforms into a PSP! Powered by a 1GHz processor with embedded graphics processor, it delivers 60 frames per second playback on its 480 x 854 screen. It even comes pre-loaded with six games such as FIFA 10 and Sims 3, so you can start playing right out of the box!

A brief hands-on with Play elicits all the positive vibes as it does when cradling a PSP. Unfortunately, you have to wait till the second quarter (Q2) of this year to get your hands on it here.

The latest Sony Ericsson Gingerbread smartphones, Arc and Neo, will be made available in this quarter and Q2 2011 respectively. Prices will be revealed at a later date. Trevor Tan

    Tablet Review: PROLiNK TW8

    Tablet Review: PROLiNK TW8

    A decent work companion
    by May Chua
    04:45 AM Mar 25, 2011

The slew of Android tablets unveiled recently may have Windows fans feeling a little left out. Fret not - here's a review of a Windows 7 tablet, the PROLiNK TW8 ($1,099), just for you.

This device's 11.6-inch capacitive touchscreen display (that's about two inches more real estate than an iPad) makes for comfortable reading, and photos as well as video render beautifully on it. The touchscreen feels responsive, and scrolling up and down pages is fluid. It supports multi-touch as well, so you can pinch to zoom. The speakers are a bit too soft for our liking and the audio sounds tinny. Besides WiFi and Bluetooth connectivity, it supports 3G too - just slide the SIM card into the slot on its side.

While we did initially find the TW8 a tad hefty (it weighs 995g), we didn't break a sweat holding it on one arm or propping the device up on our laps.

This tablet comes with the Bossa Nova User Interface, which is basically a screen where you can quickly access apps for Facebook, Twitter, Flickr, Internet browsing, RSS feeds, maps and media playback, as well as control the wireless connection, brightness and volume.

Typing on this device is tiresome and takes some getting used to, as is expected for any touchscreen device. For one, the keyboard does not automatically appear when you touch a text field - which is also a problem when you are using an app in Bossa Nova and the button to summon the keyboard doesn't appear (this happened several times). The lag in the text prediction system renders the "prediction" useless.

The battery life is decent - it easily lasts a day or more when we leave it on standby most of the time, only playing with it occasionally for minutes at a time. With constant use - including surfing the net, watching videos and playing games like Solitaire - the machine lasts about 3.5 hours.

Sometimes, the display does not re-orientate itself when you turn the device around. We have also encountered several incidences where the Windows taskbar glitches after you rotate the tablet, and you have to restart Windows Explorer to regain its function.

The TW8 is powered by a 1.66GHz Intel Atom N450 processor, and comes installed with Windows 7 Home Premium. There are two USB ports, a SDHC card slot and a mini-HDMI port.

In all, we found the PROLiNK TW8 useful for checking emails, running some light programmes, web-surfing and doing work that doesn't require typing essay-length texts.

Olympus PEN E-P2 12.3 MP Micro Four Thirds Interchangeable Lens Digital Camera with 14-42mm f/3.5-5.6 Zuiko Digital Zoom Lens and Electronic View Finder

The new PEN, like the E-P1, is the world's smallest 12.3-megapixel interchangeable lens system with In-body Image Stabilization. It blends the high-quality still images like that of a DSLR with High Definition (HD) video, stereo Linear PCM audio recording and In-Camera Creativity inside an ultra-portable body. Along with several new features, and eight in-camera Art Filters that can be applied to still images and HD videos, the result is mighty powerful and creative.

The innovative E-P2 offers more of what photo enthusiasts have been asking for:
    • A stylish retro black metal body reminiscent of a traditional PEN camera;
    • Accessory port to accommodate the included detachable VF-2 Electronic View Finder (EVF) or optional external microphone adapter EMA-1;
    • A newly-developed Continuous Autofocus (C-AF) Tracking System tracks the subject across or back-and-forward through the frame;
    • Two new art filters: Diorama & Cross Process for greater creative expression in your still images and HD videos;
    • iEnhance to automatically adjust color and contrast for a more dramatic effect;
    • Full Manual Control of shutter/aperture in Movie Mode; and
    • HDMI Control of camera's playback functions using the TV Remote when the camera is connected to an HDTV.

    Olympus PEN E-P2 Highlights

Accessorize: Everything Goes with Basic Black
The E-P2 incorporates a new port for connecting new accessories including an optional EMA-1 Microphone adapter and the VF-2 live-finder, a detachable electronic viewfinder that comes with the E-P2. The live-finder easily slides onto the camera's accessory port and hot shoe when needed to provide 1.15x magnification, a 100% field of view with amazing resolution, brightness and contrast. The viewfinder refreshes quickly to minimize image ghosting on fast-moving subjects.

The VF-2 rotates up to 90 degrees to enable photographers to look down into it, which is useful when shooting subjects from challenging angles. The built-in diopter adjustment and high magnification offer easy viewing with and without glasses.

For those who want to capture enhanced audio, the new EMA-1 external microphone connector can be plugged into the new camera's external accessory port. The connector will accept the optional Olympus ME-51S stereo microphone or any microphone of their choice. Olympus has a variety of other accessories to maximize the functionality of the new PEN, including the previously released 14-42mm and 17mm Micro Four Thirds lenses. The MMF-1 Four Thirds System Lens Adapter makes E-P2 compatible with all Olympus ZUIKO Digital SpecificTM lenses and other Four Thirds System lenses from Sigma, Panasonic and Leica. Olympus OM film-based lenses can be attached to the E-P2 with the MF-2 OM Lens Adapter. Additionally, an optional FL-14 flash unit, suitably small for the camera, adds more lighting versatility to your shots.

Stay focused on Your Targets Wherever They Roam
Sometimes it can be hard enough to keep up with kids, let alone take pictures of them. The E-P2's new C-AF Tracking and AF Target Registration locks your subject into focus, and constantly adjusts focus and brightness whether you or your subject is moving. With this mode, a simple push of the shutter release enables you to keep fast-moving and unpredictable subjects in focus--tracking subjects from left to right and from front to back--within the frame, automatically ensuring that even active subjects are captured clearly.

    Even More Ways to Create
Olympus pioneered easy-to-use in-camera art filters for still images captured inside its E-System DSLRs. It was the first company to offer the ability to apply art filters to High Definition video recordings captured with the E-P1. Now, the E-P2 continues this tradition of innovation with eight in-camera art filters, including two new filters: the Diorama and Cross Process. The Diorama art filter gives users a miniature model photo feeling by narrowing the depth of focus and enhancing color and contrast. The selective focus that this filter offers lends intimacy to images of even the largest subjects like canyons or cityscapes.

The Cross Process art filter offers an unexpected look to images and videos by changing the color and contrast of subjects on the fly. Using this mode can result in surreal other-worldly images. Whether you're a videographer, documentarian or established director--or just want to shoot like one --Art Filters set your images and videos apart from the pack. Since they're built into the camera, you can achieve dramatic results on the go without needing a computer or editing software. These new filters are a welcome addition to the Pop Art, Soft Focus, Pale & Light Color, Light Tone, Grainy Film and Pin Hole filters previously available on the E-P1.

Because the PEN is an interchangable lens system camera, you also have more creative options for video capture. You can attach any one of the new super-compact Micro Four Thirds lenses or, because the camera can accept many of the other Four Thirds Format lenses with an available MMF-1 Four Thirds System Lens Adapter, you can add anything from an extreme wide-angle fisheye lens to a super telephoto lens for a wide range of expressive options. All the while you will have more DSLR-like control over depth of field, focus, white balance and ISO. It begs the question, "What will you create?"

    iEnhance for Radiant Colors
The E-P2 includes a new picture mode called iEnhance, which analyzes colors and brightness. The new mode mimics what the naked eye sees. For example, a beautiful sunset looks awesome in person and generally seems to fade when captured in an image. With iEnhance, the warm yellow and orange colors are heightened to be brilliant and closer to the actual scene. The result is exceptionally clear imaging with a dramatically lifelike color. iEnhance can be used in any shooting mode--from program to manual--and automatically engages when in iAuto.

HDMI Control from Your HDTV Remote
The new PEN makes sharing your content easier than ever. Just connect the E-P2 to your HDTV with an optional HDMI cable and use your HDTV's remote to control playback functions and navigate the camera's menus from the comfort of your favorite couch or chair.

    Manual in Movie Mode
The E-P2's manual movie mode allows for independent control of aperture and shutter for expanded exposure and creative control. Now you can adjust the shutter to control the depth of focus while using the aperture to set the overall brightness of the video. This level of control allows you to express your vision exactly how you want in your HD videos.

    Make a Design Statement
The E-P2's high-end, stainless-steel all-black body is easy to handle and carry, and has the styling and refinement of a precision chronometer. Its retro-chic look turns heads, from tech-aficionados and camera buffs to the style-conscious and everyday point-and-shooter. Built rock solid, it fits comfortably in a jacket pocket or a handbag for impromptu street-shooting or any spontaneous adventure. The E-P2 lets you do more and go more places while capturing your life, thanks to its compact size--4.74"(W) x 2.75" (H) x 1.37" (D)--and light 11.1-ounce body. Attention to detail is visible in every aspect of the PEN's design, including the currently available small and lightweight 14-42mm and 17mm M. Zuiko Digital lenses as well as the newly announced 9-18mm f4.0-5.6 (18-36mm equivalent) and 14-150mm f4.0-5.6 (28-300mm equivalent) M. Zuiko Digital lenses.

Ultra-Compact Body Delivers Superior Image Quality
The E-P2 has everything you need to produce vibrant DSLR-quality images: a large 12.3-megapixel imager, In-body Image Stabilization, fast Imager Autofocus, the proven Olympus Dust Reduction System and the new TruePic V Image Processor.

Olympus PEN E-P2 digital camera highlights

Standard point-and-shoot sensor vs. the PEN E-P2 sensor
As the second Micro Four Thirds camera from Olympus, the E-P2 provides the same image quality as current Four Thirds format E-System cameras because it has the same image sensor size as the E-30 and E-620 DSLR models, but in a much smaller body. This high-performance 12.3-megapixel Live MOS image sensor delivers excellent dynamic range, accurate color fidelity, and a state-of-the-art amplifier circuit to reduce noise and capture fine image details in both highlight and shadow areas.

The E-P2's Live MOS image sensor is complemented by Olympus' TruePic V Image Processor, which produces clear and colorful photos using all the pixel information for each image to provide the best digital images possible. The image processor is noted for accurate natural color, true-to-life flesh tones, brilliant blue skies and precise tonal expression; it also lowers image noise in photos shot at higher ISO settings (ISO 100 to ISO 6400), enabling great results in low-light situations.

Be a Mover, Not a Shaker
Any lens attached to the E-P2 will deliver blur-free images thanks to three modes of In-body Image Stabilization that compensate for up to four steps EV (exposure value). Mechanical Image Stabilization automatically compensates for camera shake in low light or when shooting without a tripod. Since the PEN is the world's smallest interchangeable lens camera with In-body Image Stabilization, you'll feel comfortable taking it on the road with you to capture the action. As an added advantage, the built-in image stabilization works not only with the M. Zuiko lenses but all Four Thirds lenses and even older OM film-based lenses when used with the appropriate adapter for the E-P2.

Small Real Estate with an Amazing 3-Inch LCD View
Consumers accustomed to composing and focusing using a point-and-shoot camera's LCD will appreciate the E-P2's 100 percent accurate, 3-inch full color HyperCrystal LCD, which gives them the same easy, seamless experience when shooting still images or videos. The camera's Live Control function makes it easy to compose, edit and shoot pictures or videos without stopping to access various menus. The E-P2's fast Imager Autofocus in Live View also enables you to compose, focus and capture the shot quickly and easily without ever taking your eyes off the large LCD.

Olympus PEN E-P2 digital camera highlights

The LCD displays 230,000 pixels in vivid color and includes HyperCrystal technology, which offers many times the contrast of conventional LCD monitors for easier viewing in both preview and playback. It also provides a wide viewing angle of 176 degrees, which ensures that images can be composed from even the most obscure angles.

This Camera Leaves Others in the Dust
You don't have to waste precious time worrying about dust ruining the perfect image; instead, spend more of that time shooting with the E-P2. The proven Olympus Dust Reduction System produces spot-free photos with the exclusive
Supersonic Wave Filter, a patented ultrasonic technology that vibrates to remove dust and other particles from the front of the image sensor, capturing it on a special adhesive membrane every time the camera is turned on.

What You See Is What You Get
When viewing the LCD in Live View, Art Filter effects and settings like white balance and exposure are viewable right on the LCD, and their impact is seen instantly on the display. Real-time monitoring offers amazing versatility and creative control, and users who apply a setting have instant gratification because what they see on the camera's LCD is what they've captured. For musicians used to applying audio effects like reverb to their instruments before recording them, the concept of setting the E-P2 to capture precisely the kind of image they want before they press the shutter makes perfect sense. For imaging purists who want to shoot without filters, and apply them to images inside the camera later, or just edit images back at their computers, the E-P2 provides these options and opens more in-the-field creative possibilities.

Mix It Up with Multiple Exposure
With the E-P2's Multiple Exposure function available for still image capture, you are free to tell a visual story your way, whether in a portrait, a landscape or a combination of both. The image capture options allow you to shoot one shot, then another and combine them in real time, or capture both shots separately and combine them in the camera later. Overlay your face on top of your pet's face. Create an "identical twin" of yourself. Put the moon in the sky at noon. Your ability to manipulate space and time makes this new creative multimedia device a veritable time machine.

Frame Your Works of Art Inside the PEN
You can often achieve greater photographic expression by framing a scene in a unique way. The E-P2 provides four aspect ratios that serve as masks to frame your image to the desired proportions, including: the standard 4:3 aspect ratio that is suited to an 8 x 10-inch enlargement; the 16:9 aspect ratio that will display your images beautifully on a widescreen television; and other popular aspect ratios such as 3:2 and 6:6. The Multi-Aspect Shooting further expresses your creative vision when combined with Art Filters and multiple exposures. What will you create?

Stereo Audio Sounds As Good As the PEN Images Look
Like the innovative Olympus LS-11 portable audio recording device that puts the power of a recording studio in your pocket, the E-P2 features uncompressed CD-quality 16 bit/44.1kHz Linear PCM stereo recording capability to capture the rich sound quality of your scene. When you shoot with the E-P2, it's like having a sound technician built into your camera to capture the nuances of the audio happening all around you. It has the versatility to record and play back in the WAV format and can record with its built-in stereo microphone. Whether recording audio while shooting a video or adding audio by recording a narration to your still images, the E-P2's audio sounds as great as its images look. Now, with the new stereo microphone adapter, there is new freedom in audio capture with the PEN.

Create Your Own Multimedia Slideshows with Stills, Video and Audio Inside E-P2
Content is king, and with the E-P2 you have your own portable kingdom of still images, HD video, and audio to remix at your command. In playback mode you can seamlessly mix stills and movies inside the camera to create a multimedia slideshow; dub in one of five built-in dramatic background music options to provide a soundtrack for your cinematic creation. Plug the E-P2 into any HD television with an HDMI cable and show off your masterpieces to your audience before your DVD arrives in stores!

Olympus PEN E-P2 digital camera highlights

As Easy to Use as a Point-and-Shoot with SLR-Quality Technologies
The E-P2 is equipped with 19 scene-select modes for effortless picture taking. Standard scene modes like Night-Scene, Portrait and Landscape are easy-to-use solutions for everyday shooting. Capturing beautiful portraits is easy with the new ePortrait Mode. It enables you to smooth your subject's skin--all in the camera and before capture! Additionally, edits can be made post-capture using the ePortrait mode.

Shooting scenes with both highlights and shadows can often be a challenge because of the extreme contrast between dark and bright areas. The E-P2 addresses this challenge with Shadow Adjustment Technology that adjusts for extreme light variations and maintains visible detail in both the shadow and highlight areas of the scene. Now users can see and preview the gradation on the Live View LCD and capture images showing the shadow detail they saw. This feature is also accessible in the Edit menu after the shot has been taken.

The E-P2's Face Detection reduces the chance of blurred subjects in images by recognizing up to eight people's faces and the background, tracking the faces within the image area, even if people are moving, and automatically focusing and optimizing exposure for sharp, brilliant portrait pictures (ideal for large family or party group photos).

Don't like changing camera settings for each shooting situation? The E-P2's Intelligent Auto Mode automatically identifies what you're shooting (Portrait, Landscape, Night + Portrait, Macro, Sports) and adjusts settings to capture the best result depending on the situation. First-time users will enjoy this quick and hassle-free feature, which does the thinking for them and produces incredible images like a pro.

The E-P2 offers ease-of-use and flexibility to meet your shooting style. Choose the Live Control technology, an advanced control panel system that incorporates the use of the sub dial and enables you to see the image and the menu controls all at the same time on the LCD. As a result, you can use the main and sub dials to select modes and adjust settings without having to take your eyes off the subject. Or if you prefer, shoot with the Super Control Panel, which is familiar to any serious shooter. These options along with the camera's intuitive button layout make the camera simple to use. The E-P2 records to SDHC media cards to accommodate large files including videos with In-Camera Creative Features and uncompressed audio.

    Digital Leveler
The E-P2 is equipped with an internal Digital Level Sensor that detects the camera's pitch and roll and indicates it on the control panel. This Digital Leveler is a tremendous benefit when capturing architecture and landscapes. Level the perfect coastline shot on your next tropical vacation without being tethered to a computer and editing software.

    Magnified Focus Assist
The E-P2 provides two optional methods to help the user focus: a Magnified Focus (MF) Assist Function and Magnification Display. When using manual focus, the MF Assist feature aids with critical focus by allowing you to zoom in on part of the image by simply turning the focusing ring on the front of the lens. The Magnification Display enables you to selectively enlarge the image on the LCD at the touch of a button. This mode works for both autofocus and manual focus. Both MF Assist methods provide up to a 10x magnification of a single point of the image for critical focus; perfect for macro or still-life photography.

    18x18 Metering Modes
This mode divides the image area into an 18 x 18 grid, metering each of the 324 separate cells to obtain optimum exposure. In addition to 324-division ESP metering, center-weighted metering and spot metering modes are also available.

    Olympus Master 2 Software
Use the included Olympus Master 2 software (Mac and PC) to easily download images and videos from the camera or other external device, such as a USB drive, and automatically organize them into albums and groups and by date. Develop high-quality RAW images, apply Art Filter effects, edit and print images. Also, apply the most common editing functions to your HD videos. Update camera and lens firmware through the software and download additional menu languages. A direct link makes uploading your images and videos to YouTube easier than ever.

Olympus Studio 2 (Trial Edition Included)
Extend the capability of Olympus Master 2 with Olympus Studio 2. In addition to the functions of Olympus Master 2, this software includes a lightbox mode and selection marks for comparing and sorting multiple images. RAW processing is enhanced with additional controls for finer adjustments. The trial edition can be used for 30 days after installation. After the trial period has expired, a license key is required for further use.

This third-generation PEN is built for shutterbugs who always wanted better pictures and considered a DSLR, but were intimidated by the bulky size and complex interface. The new camera's simple design and easy interface enable photographers to easily create amazing images never dreamt possible.

The E-PL1 equals an affordable and powerfully simple all-in-one package that travels with you to capture life in the high quality that your memories deserve.

Easily Pen Your Story with a Brand-New PEN

This third generation of the Olympus PEN series combines powerful features in an easy-to-use package that will make capturing your life more fun. The new direct record button makes taking videos easier than ever and the new Live Guide functionality makes it simple to learn photography techniques without requiring the skills of a pro shooter.

New Direct Button for HD Movies
Recording HD movies with the E-PL1 is simple, thanks to an easy-to-reach red "direct button" (red record button) on the back of the camera body. If you're about to snap a photo and you realize a video would capture the spirit of the scene even better, simply press the record button and instantly you're capturing videos! Easily toggle back and forth between capturing stills and videos by using your index finger to press the shutter button or your thumb to press the red record button. Having the ability to shoot still images and videos opens up a world of imaging possibilities.

New Live Guide Sets the Scene Before You Shoot
The E-PL1's new Live Guide interface simplifies great photography and gets the results you desire at the touch of a button. Want more vivid or muted color in your shot? Want warmer or cooler color? Want a brighter or darker subject, or a sharper or softer background? Or maybe you want to capture the fast-moving action of your subject with a little artistic blur, or perhaps freeze the action? Simply select Live Guide and press the up and down arrows on the back of the camera to slide through numerous photographic effects. Make adjustments and watch the LCD as the effects are made live before the image is captured! Don't worry about learning technical things like f-stops, shutter speed and white balance; jump right in by composing, adjusting exposure and more before the shot is taken.

Seeing the results before snapping the image ensures you are getting the shots you want, and it will change the way you photograph. Shooting Tips are also included with Live Guide, so you can leave the manual at home.

    Automate Everything
Live Guide is just the start of automated technologies on the E-PL1 designed to free you up to focus on your subjects instead of focusing on your camera's settings.

Intelligent Auto Mode identifies the ideal setting

    • Face Detection: Reduce the chance of blurred subjects in images by recognizing up to eight faces, tracking them within the image area, and automatically focusing and optimizing exposure for sharp portraits.

Olympus PEN E-PL1 12.3MP Live MOS Micro Four Thirds Interchangeable Lens Digital Camera with 14-42mm f/3.5-5.6 Zuiko Digital Zoom Lens (Slate Blue)
    New Powerfully Simple Pop-Up Flash
The E-PL1 is the first camera in the Olympus PEN series with a built-in pop-up flash that makes it easy to illuminate low-light subjects, reduce red-eye and fill in dark areas. The camera is also compatible with a range of optional external flashes, including the Olympus FL-36R and FL-50R, which can be controlled wirelessly by the E-PL1 so you can dynamically control lighting as your photography skills grow.

    Pro-Quality Images

How do professional photographers capture the stunning images you see in the pages of glossy magazines and coffee-table books? Talent matters, of course, but you also need the right equipment. Rest assured that the E-PL1 has everything you need to produce vibrant, professional-quality images: a large image sensor, in-body Image Stabilization, Imager Autofocus, the proven Olympus Dust Reduction System and the TruePic V Image Processor.

    Olympus PEN E-PL1 highlights

Standard point-and-shoot sensor vs. the PEN E-PL1 sensor

Big Sensor, Not a Big Body
At the heart of the E-PL1 is a large-size image sensor that's the same sensor as the one inside the Olympus E-30 and E-620 DSLR models. The only difference between this sensor and what the pros use is that this big sensor is inside the much smaller body of the E-PL1. This high-performance 12.3-megapixel Live MOS image sensor (eight times larger than the average point-and-shoot camera sensor) delivers excellent dynamic range, accurate color fidelity, and a state-of-the-art amplifier circuit to reduce noise and capture fine image details in both highlight and shadow areas.

    Stabilize All of Your Lenses
Instead of selling more expensive lenses that have image stabilization inside them, Olympus takes a different approach by having image stabilization built right into the body of the E-PL1. This means that any lens (Micro Four Thirds, Four Thirds and any third-party lens) attached to the E-PL1 will deliver blur-free images thanks to three modes of In-body Image Stabilization that automatically compensate for camera shake, including in low-light situations or when shooting without a tripod. Since the PEN cameras are the world's smallest interchangeable-lens cameras with image stabilization built inside the body, you can take the E-PL1 with you and capture great images, and it won't weigh you down.

Track Your Subjects Wherever They Roam
The E-PL1's Continuous Autofocus (C-AF) Tracking and Autofocus (AF) Target Registration locks your subject into focus and constantly adjusts focus and brightness whether you or your subject is moving. With this mode, a simple push of the shutter release enables you to keep moving subjects in focus--tracking them from left to right and from front to back--within the frame, automatically ensuring that even active subjects, like kids playing sports, are captured clearly.
    Olympus PEN E-PL1 highlights

Olympus PEN E-PL1 12.3MP Live MOS Micro Four Thirds Interchangeable Lens Digital Camera with 14-42mm f/3.5-5.6 Zuiko Digital Zoom Lens (Slate Blue)

The E-PL1's Imager Autofocus in Live View enables you to compose, focus and capture the shot quickly and easily without ever taking your eyes off the camera's large, 2.7-inch full-color, high-contrast HyperCrystal LCD for an easy, seamless viewing experience when shooting still images or videos. The LCD also provides a wide viewing angle of 176 degrees, which ensures that images can be composed from even the most obscure angles.

This Camera Leaves Others in the Dust
If you're just starting out with a camera that has interchangeable lenses, you don't have to worry about dust spots on your sensor ruining the perfect image every time you change lenses. Spend more time shooting with the E-PL1 and less time worrying about dust with the proven Olympus Dust Reduction System that produces spot-free photos with the exclusive Supersonic Wave Filter, a patented ultrasonic technology that vibrates to remove dust and other particles from the front of the image sensor, capturing them on a special adhesive membrane every time the camera is turned on.

    True-to-Life Color
The E-PL1's Live MOS image sensor is complemented by Olympus' TruePic V Image Processor, which produces clear and colorful photos using all the pixel information for each image to provide the best digital images possible. The image processor is noted for accurate natural color, true-to-life flesh tones, brilliant blue skies and precise tonal expression; it also lowers image noise in photos shot at higher ISO settings (ISO 100 to ISO 3200), enabling great results in low-light situations.

Easily Expand Your Creative Horizons With Built-in Effects

Express yourself with in-camera creative features. Professional images are rarely unedited images. Video and still image pros use computer-editing software to render their images with effects that set their shots apart from the pack. Olympus appreciates that you may not have hours to spend retouching your images at the computer, so the E-PL1 incorporates editing effects inside the camera to save you time. Whether you apply in-camera creative effects while shooting an image, or apply them later to images captured without the effects, all are inside the E-PL1, so you can achieve dramatic results on the go without a computer or editing software.

The E-PL1 has six in-camera Art Filters, including a new filter called Gentle Sepia. This filter gives your images and videos a soft, warm sepia cast similar to historical images from the early days of photography. The sepia tones are softer and the blacks are a true black, unlike traditional sepia images. The new filter joins Pop Art, Soft Focus, Pin Hole, Grainy Film and Diorama (the filter that makes everything look as small as the E-PL1).

With the E-PL1's Multiple Exposure function available for still image capture, you are free to tell a visual story your way. The image capture options enable you to shoot one shot, then another and combine them in real time, or capture both shots separately and combine them within the camera later. Take a shot of your significant other, and overlay your self-portrait on top to figure out what your kids will look like. If you have kids already, overlay your kid's face on top of a shot of his or her favorite cartoon character for laughs. Your ability to manipulate space and time makes this new creative multimedia device a veritable time machine.

You often can achieve greater photographic expression by framing a scene in a unique way. The E-PL1 provides four aspect ratios that serve as masks to frame your image to the desired proportions, including the standard 4:3 aspect ratio that is suited to an 8 x 10-inch enlargement; the 16:9 aspect ratio that will display beautifully on a widescreen television; and other popular aspect ratios, such as 3:2 and 6:6. The Multi-Aspect Shooting further expresses your creative vision when combined with in-camera Art Filters and Multiple Exposures.

With the E-PL1, you have your own living library of still images, HD video and audio to remix at your command. In playback mode, you can seamlessly mix stills and movies inside the camera to create a multimedia slideshow, and dub in one of three built-in dramatic background music options to provide a soundtrack for your cinematic creation. With so many creative options, there's no limit to what you can create. Choose whether or not you want to play back just pictures, just movies or a combination; also control playing back the whole movie or just a clip.

Open System Easily Grows with Your Ability

With a basic point-and-shoot camera, you get one lens built into the camera. One lens, that's it. And it's likely a small lens, which doesn't allow a lot of light through to hit the image sensor. So, you may have a difficult time in low-light conditions. And without the option of adding more lenses, you're limited to what that one point-and-shoot lens can do. The E-PL1 solves these issues by accepting a variety of lenses to maximize its functionality. Whether shooting still images or HD video, you can add everything from an extreme wide-angle fisheye lens to a super-telephoto lens for a wide range of expressive options.

The M. Zuiko Digital Micro Four Thirds lenses are designed to be more compact and portable like the E-PL1. Choose from the ED 14-42mm f3.5/5.6 zoom lens (28-84mm equivalent in 35mm cameras) sold with the E-PL1, the ED 17mm f2.8 lens (34mm equivalent), the new super wide-angle zoom ED 9-18mm f4.0-5.6 lens (18-36mm equivalent) or the high-power wide to telephoto zoom ED 14-150mm f4.0-5.6 lens (28-300mm equivalent).

If you want to have even more options, the MMF-2 Four Thirds System Lens Adapter makes the E-PL1 compatible with all Olympus Zuiko Digital Specific lenses and other Four Thirds System lenses from Sigma, Panasonic and Leica. Olympus OM film-based lenses can be attached to the E-PL1 with the MF-2 OM Lens Adapter, and there are third-party adapters developed for lenses from most other manufacturers.

Software & Accessory Options When You're Ready

The E-PL1 incorporates an accessory port for connecting the optional VF-2 live-finder, a detachable electronic viewfinder, or the new optional SEMA-1 external microphone adapter set (which includes the EMA-1 adapter, the ME-51S stereo microphone and a cord) for those who want to capture enhanced audio with any microphone that has a 3.5mm plug. These optional accessories easily slide into the camera's accessory port and hot shoe.

Photographers who wish to hold the E-PL1 up to their eye rather than use the LCD will appreciate that the optional VF-2, which provides 1.15x magnification and a 100 percent field of view with sharp resolution, brightness and contrast. The viewfinder refreshes quickly to minimize image ghosting on fast-moving subjects. It also rotates up to 90 degrees to enable photographers to look down into it, which is useful when shooting subjects from challenging angles. The built-in diopter adjustment and high magnification offer easy viewing with and without glasses.

The E-PL1 offers OLYMPUS [ib] software that includes photography workflow, browsing, editing and unique photo-organizing functions. You can organize your photos by person with automatic face-recognition technology, by location with a Geotagging function or by event. You can easily view photos on an HDTV or on the camera's LCD with the Photo Surfing or Slideshow functions. The name [ib] stands for image bridging, image browsing and image brightening. The software will be available for Windows operating systems only.

    Underwater Housing for Aquatic Adventures
The new camera's compact design makes it the perfect companion for all of your dive trips. The PT-EP01 underwater case has been specially customized for the Olympus E-PL1 and is waterproof to a depth of 40 meters (approximately 130 feet). With its durable, high-quality polycarbonate construction, this Olympus housing protects the camera from water while also cushioning it from knocks and bumps on land. The housing enables viewing from either the camera's LCD screen or an optional electronic viewfinder. The flash connectors allow optional use of up to two UFL-2 underwater flash units via fiber optic cable. A nonremovable front lens port accommodates multiple Micro Four Thirds lenses.

New Exterior Design, Same PEN DNA
The E-PL1 streamlines the Olympus Micro Four Thirds PEN series form. Thanks to its compact size (4.51" W x 2.84" H x 1.63" D excluding protrusions) and light 10.4-ounce body, the E-PL1 won't weigh you down when you're on the go.
