Online Only: New BlackBerry Curve gets 3G, will get OS6

Research in Motion (RIM) today announced that the BlackBerry Curve 3G 9300 - announced last month for the US; not to be confused with the Curve 3G 9330 which has slightly different specs - will be available in Singapore "in the coming weeks".

The 9300 is an update to RIM's entry-level but feature-complete BlackBerry Curve smartphone series that finally brings GPS and 3G to the table. Its specs include a 320x240 screen, a 624MHz processor, 802.11b/g/n WiFi, a 2-megapixel camera with 5x digital zoom, 256MB of internal storage as well as a microSD/SDHC slot that supports up to 32GB. And like most handsets in the BlackBerry family, it is equipped with a full Qwerty keypad, an optical navigational trackpad, and shortcut keys on the left and right edges of the device.

What's unique about the Curve series is a set of media control keys at the top of the handset (Previous, Play/Pause/Mute, and Next keys) that makes accessibility a breeze.

The 9300 runs on BlackBerry OS5, but will be able to receive an update to OS6, which includes features like a revamped user interface, universal search that combs through the entire device, and a better web browser with support for HTML5, browser tabs, and text-wrapping. No concrete schedule as to when the OS6 update will drop - RIM representatives say it will be rolled out to devices on a carrier-by-carrier basis.

Price and availability details for the Curve 3G 9300 will be announced later.

A stellar first shot from Sony

Digital Camera Review: Sony Alpha NEX-5

by Trevor Tan
05:55 AM Sep 17, 2010

Sony Alpha NEX-5 Digital Camera Body & E 18-55mm OSS Compact Interchangeable Lens (Silver) with 16GB Card + Battery + Case + Accessory KitTHE mirrorless interchangeable lens camera market is becoming increasingly crowded, with Sony becoming the latest to jump on the bandwagon with its Alpha NEX-5.

Without the pentaprism and the reflex mirror of digital single-reflex (DSLR) cameras, mirrorless cameras become very compact while managing to retain the sensor (and picture quality) of a DSLR.

Available in black or silver and capable of shooting full high-definition (HD) 1080i videos, the NEX-5 boasts a 14.2-megapixel Exmor APS-C HD CMOS image sensor (with 1.5x crop factor), a BIONZ image processor, a tiltable three-inch LCD screen and dual memory card slots (Memory Stick and SD card).

Without any lens attached, the NEX-5 looks like any digital compact camera. Measuring 10.8x58.8x38.2mm and weighing 229g (without battery), it is the world's smallest and lightest mirrorless interchangeable lens digital body, says Sony.

The body feels sturdy in the hand despite its diminutive size and light weight. But the rubberised grip is so small that I had to use my ring finger and pinky to support the grip in order to hold the camera properly.

The compactness of the NEX-5 means fewer buttons can be placed on the body. On the top right of the camera sit the power, play, shutter release buttons and video record button. The rear right hosts three buttons and a wheel dial.

Although this button layout allows you to access the controls quite easily, it is labourious to change most settings, as it has to be done via the menu screen. For example, to change the ISO settings, you will need to access the home menu, go to "Brightness/Color", and browse to ISO before you can turn the dial to change to the setting you desire.

Fixing the metallic-barrelled E-mount lens (maybe except the 16mm f/2.8 pancake lens) will increase the camera profile substantially. Even the 18-55mm kit lens makes the camera a tad imbalanced at times when you hold it.

The startup and shutdown performance is good, clocking 1.2 seconds and 0.6 seconds respectively. Auto focus performance is equally impressive, at 0.4 seconds in good lighting. In low-lighting conditions, it takes up to a second to lock on a focus. Shutter lag is around 0.4 seconds, with shot-to-shot timing clocking around a second.

Picture quality is fantastic, with smooth gradation of pixels and vivid colour reproduction. Auto white balance, while accurate, tends toward the warmer side. Noise levels cannot be picked up until ISO 800. At ISO 1600, noise is not very visible but the image does get a bit soft. Even at ISO 3200, where noise is visible, it looks natural and film-grained.

HD video quality is crisp and sharp. And with the NEX-5's ability to re-focus automatically during video recording, you will not miss a thing. The drawbacks are the limited video control that only allows you to de-focus the background, and obtrusive ambient audio that is picked up readily.

Sony's first shot at the mirrorless interchangeable lens system is a real bargain at $1,199 with the 18-55mm kit lens. This is especially so given the stellar image and video quality, which easily compensate for the camera's less than ideal handling. TREVOR TAN

iWatch becomes reality

>> Friday, September 17, 2010

NEW YORK

AN AMERICAN company called iLoveHandles has started selling Rock Band, a leather strap that turns your iPod nano into a wristwatch, Mashable.com reported.

The strap has a special notch to accommodate the iPod nano’s built-in clip. It costs US$19.95 (S$26.70) – a small price to pay if one’s lifelong dream is to carry an Apple product on your wrist.

Technology website Gizmodo hailed it as a brilliant idea but CrunchGear has a few reservations. For example, the latter noted that eight hours of battery life is not at all ideal for a wristwatch.

Also, since an iPod is not even remotely water-resistant, you will need to be very conscious not to get your handswet while wearing it or you could very easily end up with a dead device lashed to your arm, like something from some gadget- based horror film, Mobility Site.com reported.

Nokia strikes back

LONDON

CELLPHONE maker Nokia on Tuesday unveiled the smartphones its new management team will be using in its fight to win back market share from Apple and Research In Motion.

The world’s biggest cellphone maker, Nokia is engaged in a major management revamp, with the departures of its chief executive and chairman announced last week and its top internal candidate for the CEO post resigning on Monday after an outsider was chosen for the job.

Nokia still controls around 40 per cent of the global smartphone- market volume, but has lost out to Apple and Research In Motion’s BlackBerry in the fatter-margin market for the most expensive cellphone models.

“Today, our fight back to smartphone leadership shifts into high gear,” Mr Niklas Savander, head of Nokia markets unit, said in a speech at the London launch.

The new models – E7, C7 and a new version of the C6 – all come with large touchscreens and use the latest Symbian software.

“The products are a clear improvement... but we know they are not where Nokia needs to be yet, and any other promise around ‘we are working on it’ would not have convinced anyone,” said Gartner analyst Carolina Milanesi.

“A new CEO and the old guard stepping down might give investors more confidence that
things are really changing.”

The phones will go on sale before the end of the year at prices ranging from 260 euros (S$450) to 495 euros, excluding subsidies and taxes.

Last week, Nokia announced it was hiring Mr Stephen Elop, a Microsoft executive with Silicon Valley credentials, to replace embattled chief executive Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo and renew its drive to compete with Apple.

Mr Elop and Mr Kallasvuo were not among speakers at Nokia’s annual top media show, Nokia World, which ended yesterday.

On Monday, Nokia’s smartphone and services chief, Mr Anssi Vanjoki – an outspoken and respected figure in the mobile- phone industry who was considered the most likely internal candidate to replace Mr Kallasvuo – announced his resignation.

Underlining the scale of the change, chairman Jorma Ollila, who led Nokia’s transformation from a rubber boots-to-TV sets conglomerate into a mobile-phone giant in the 1990s, said last week he would step down shortly.

Analysts said they did not expect the management change to have a quick impact on Nokia’s strategic plans.

“In the midst of management turmoil, Nokia is attempting to keep a steady hand on the tiller,” said Mr Ben Wood, head of research at CCS Insight.

“Although many questions are being raised about its future strategic direction, in the near term, we expect the company to stick with the vision it has outlined,”
Mr Wood said.

Nokia dishes out Symbian 3 phones, holds back on MeeGo device

>> Wednesday, September 15, 2010

by Ariel Tam
Updated 01:00 PM Sep 15, 2010

A quartet of smartphones running on Nokia's latest Symbian 3 open-source operating system (OS) took the spotlight at Nokia World 2010 in London on Tuesday. And those expecting a MeeGo device announcement - borne from the February marriage of Nokia and Intel's respective Maemo and Moblin Linux platforms - would have to patiently wait for an update later this year.

For now, Nokia appears to be banking on Symbian 3 to counter the rise of Apple, Google and RIM in the lucrative and cut-throat smartphone arena. While Symbian took the lead in smartphone OSes in the second quarter of the year according to Gartner, its 41.2 per cent market share represented a marked decline compared to its 51.0 per cent share in the same quarter last year. Android, on the other hand, has blossomed dramatically from 1.8 per cent to 17.2 per cent, making it the third most popular after the Blackberry OS (18.2 per cent). The Symbian 3 phones - N8, E7, C7 and C6 - signal Nokia's hope of wresting back a greater cut of the mobile OS pie, and the Finnish company is aiming to ship more than 50 million new Symbian phones.

The phones support multiple home screens, visual multitasking and gesture-based navigation, and are integrated with Qt, Nokia's application development framework that allows developers to build apps once and deploy them across open software platforms.

Nokia is also throwing in free satellite navigation software with Ovi Maps walk-and-drive voice-guided navigation, as well as Web TV services for users to get their goggle box fix of programmes on channels such as CNN and National Geographic. We take a closer look at the Symbian 3 offerings.

Nokia E7

The E7 is the latest modern-day version of what Nokia calls one of its "most iconic and loved devices", the Nokia 9000 Communicator, introduced in 1996.

And just like the first Communicator, the E7's not the most petite of phones. But with a profile of 13.6mm, it is reasonably svelte. The phone's designed to help the business professional to manage his life on the go, and sports a four-inch capacitive touchscreen and a robust slide-out full Qwerty keyboard. The Amoled screen's blessed with what Nokia calls ClearBlack technology, which touts a polariser that removes unwanted reflection, delivering a higher contrast level and better outdoor visibility while consuming less power.

Mail for Exchange support gives you real-time access to corporate email systems, and you can read and edit documents like Powerpoint files on the go. Nokia has pre-loaded a raft of business-centric apps to help you along, such as QuickOffice and F-Secure Anti-theft.

Other features include an 8-megapixel camera capable of high-definition 720p video recording, an HDMI port for connection to your home theatre system, and security options such as device lock and wipe.

Besides grey and white, the phone comes in not-too-serious hues of green, blue and orange. The phone will be launched in the fourth quarter of the year.

Nokia N8

Securing bragging rights as the first phone to run on Symbian 3 and announced in April this year, the N8 is a power-packed number sporting a 12-megapixel camera with Carl Zeiss lens and Xenon flash, as well as Dolby Digital Plus surround sound. At Nokia World, the company showed off spectacular photos taken in Singapore on the N8 and played a movie trailer of Tron: Legacy off the phone on huge screens via an HDMI cable.

A 3.5-inch widescreen capacitive touch display takes up the bulk of the phone's front façade. It supports multi-touch, and you get three customisable home screens that you can navigate with a speedy swipe of the finger.

The N8 has 16GB of internal storage, which can be beefed up to 48GB with a microSD card.

The phone comes in five shades - grey, silver, green, blue and orange - and will be available in Singapore by October.

Nokia C6

If you fancy the stainless steel-and-glass aesthetic, you might like the Nokia C6. Social network buffs can post and view real-time updates on Facebook and Twitter on the 3.2-inch ClearBlack-powered touchscreen, and synchronise events from their social networks to the phone calendar. Internal memory's on the pithy side at 340MB, but that can be augmented by a 32GB microSD card. Only two colour choices are available - silver and black. Both the C6 and C7 will be available before the end of the year.

Nokia C7

The C7 is the more powerful cousin of the C6 and sports a 3.5-inch touchscreen and a trim profile of 10.5mm. Like the C6, this phone delivers real-time updates from social networks like Twitter, and you can snap a photo, tag it with your location and upload it to Facebook in a single click. The C7 also has the honour of being what Nokia says is the first mobile device to use non-toxic bio-paint. We wouldn't quite call it the "sleekest, smoothest device in the world" like Nokia did, but we do agree that it is one respectable-looking phone. You get one more colour option besides silver and black - brown.

Navigating a gold mine

With the abrupt change in leadership announced last week, where former president of Microsoft's Business Division Stephen Elop will replace Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo as Nokia's chief executive on Sept 20, all eyes were on the Nokia World 2010 conference as industry players look for hints of the direction Nokia is heading.

One of the key areas Nokia is devoting its energy on is the mobile navigation market. The company has invested substantially in this area, including a US$8.1 billion acquisition of digital map information provider Navteq in 2008. Nokia predicts that by 2013, more than 800 million people around the world will be using GPS-enabled devices and related services.

Nokia's popular Ovi Maps service is now available for 78 countries in 46 languages. The latest beta release of Ovi Maps, available for download since Tuesday, offers dedicated pedestrian routes, real-time traffic, visibility to subways and trains in 85 cities as well as enhanced search and location-sharing capabilities.

"The next generation of mobility innovation will all be about experiences that result from leveraging the fact that you know your location," said Niklas Savander, Nokia's executive vice-president (Markets). "It is a space we intend to own."

Photo Management Software Review: Apple Aperture 3 + Apple Aperture 3

by Trevor Tan
05:55 AM Sep 10, 2010

WITH the number of digital images in our computers increasing daily, having photo management software that allows non-destructive adjustments has become essential. We focus on the latest offerings from Apple and Adobe. Trevor Tan

Apple Aperture 3 (AP3), $298

The new power features in AP3 are Faces and Places, transplanted from iPhoto '09.

Faces utilises face detection and recognition technologies to help you organise photos according to people, while Places allows your geo-tagged photos' locations to be recognised automatically. Faces and Places also let you assign faces and locations manually to your photos.

iPhoto '09 users will find it a breeze to make the leap to AP3. Go to Import and you'll find an option to import your iPhoto library. AP3 also makes it easy for you to split or merge libraries.

The user interface of AP3 is intuitive and user-friendly. You can dive into the controls and start using the tools without fiddling around much.

One of the tools most welcomed by photographers is the full-featured RGB Curves - you can adjust tones, contrast and colours precisely, and set black and white points with clicks and custom points on the curve.

There are 15 Quick Brush tools for performing touch-ups such as retouch, dodge, burn and contrast. Select the Quick Brushes in the Adjustment Panel and click on the desired touch-up. A mini-panel will appear, allowing you to change the size, softness and strength of the brush. To prevent your adjustments spilling into unwanted boundaries, activate Detect Edges.

If you are lazy, there are Quick Fixes under Presets that allow you to auto-enhance photos, increase or decrease the exposure and brighten highlights with just one click.

Another feature that distinguishes AP3 is its powerful yet easy-to-use coffee-table book creation tools. You have far more customisation options when laying out the book than in iPhoto '09. Plus, you have the option of an extra large 13x10-inch book size along with new plug-ins that enable you to order premium books from Couture and Leather Craftsmen.

It's also easy to upload photos to MobileMe, Facebook and Flickr.

The downside of AP3 is that it's available only for Mac.

Apple Pro Training Series: Aperture 3

Adobe Lightroom 3 (LR3), US$299

While LR3 does not have Faces and Places, it does have a more straightforward search system - just enter text and search any searchable fields. AP3's search system requires you to add filters.

LR3's smart import lets you save your preferred settings during the import of photos as a custom preset. For example, you prefer to import your photos into two folders in two hard drives simultaneously directly from the camera. The next time you hook up your camera, you can just choose this preset and click Import.

The user interface of LR3 can be improved - there are just too many panels. Although you can hide them, you need to remember which panel is the one you need when you want to un-hide it.

Nonetheless, LR3 provides a wider range of image adjustments compared with AP3. Quick Develop provides plenty of one-click changes. Or, you can make multiple local adjustments with the Adjustment Brushes. Create the desired effect by changing settings such as exposure, contrast, clarity and colour, then choose the size of your brush and apply it on the location you want the changes to be made.

With LR3, you get controlled sharpening with more natural results that retain the details at the same time. LR3 allows much latitude in reducing luminance and chromatic noise by keeping edges sharp to prevent the softness usually associated with noise reduction. If you prefer nostalgia and want more noise or grains on your photos, fret not. You can add natural, film-like grains. You can also add more natural vignetting with new options like Style and Contrast in the Post-Crop Vignetting tool.

The tone curve that worked more like a parametric curve previously is now a full curve where you can add custom points to change specific tones. However, it still lacks the RGB curves present in AP3. In addition, LR3 does not have the built-in book creation tools found in AP3.

LR3 is available for both Mac and PC.

Looking at this slim all-in-one PC - consisting of just a monitor and the wireless keyboard and mouse combo, no towering desktop unit - you would not think that it's been equipped with an Intel Core i3-550 3.2GHz processor, an Nvidia GeForce G240M discrete graphics card with 1GB dedicated memory, and a 500GB hard disk drive. Where did all the bulk go?

That's because the Acer Aspire Z5710 conforms not to traditional perceptions of what a desktop computer should look like, but rather what it should ideally be.

Suave and sexy all-in-one desktop PCs - computers whose motherboard and processors are built into the monitors - may be all the rage these days, but there remains a subset of consumers who prefer the traditional "tower case" for reasons such as future expandability and value-for-money pricing.

Buy the TV at Comex and Sony will throw in a PlayStation 3 console, two pairs of 3D goggles and the 3D emitter, along with a few movie and game titles
