The pink printer

Printer Review: Fuji Xerox DocuPrint P205b (Pink)

PRINTERS usually come in boring shades: Think beige, grey or black.

How about trying a pink one on for size? The Fuji Xerox DocuPrint P205b ($169) is the first monochrome laser printer in Singapore to be available in pink. Going pink comes at a premium, too - it costs $30 more than the light quartz version. And why not? Just ask my wife, who loves the shade of pink on the printer.

Although the P205b is quite compact at 358x198x209mm, the paper tray - which you need to extend for the printer to work - almost doubles its desktop footprint. Ensure you've got the desktop real estate for the printer, and you will realise it's more than just a pretty face.

The printer features Fuji Xerox's self-scanning light emitting diode and digitally enhanced lighting control imaging system technologies with 64MB of built-in memory, and gives you 1200x1200 dpi printouts at up to 24 pages (up to A4) per minute.

Setup is pretty easy. Plug in the power cord, hook it to your computer via the USB cable, install the drivers (available in both Mac and Windows), and the printer is ready to use.

When I first powered up the P205b, it took around 20 seconds before it was ready to go. The first printout of a 46KB Word document took 11 seconds. Subsequently, the same document took less than five seconds to print.

Even a 1.55MB Word document only took around 10 seconds to print, from the time I clicked print to the moment the finished page nestled in the tray. A 2.6MB JPEG monochrome photo took 14 seconds. When compared with the same photo I churned out on my personal monochrome laser printer (priced similarly to the P205b), the P205b's printout looks much sharper and exhibits more details.

The Fuji Xerox DocuPrint P205b's speed and printout quality is definitely great value for money.

From now until March 31, for every pink P205b sold, Fuji Xerox will donate $10 to the Star Shelter, which provides temporary refuge to women and children victims of domestic violence. In a concurrent Valentine's Day promotion from Jan 28 to March 6, with every purchase of the pink P205b, you can either send your beloved a bouquet of flowers or receive a $55 Pink Palour voucher.
