Keep cool in style with kid-safe designer fan

IF YOU find it a chore to clean fan grilles or worry about your child getting hurt by spinning fan blades, there is now a bladeless fan on the market.

The Air Multiplier fan has an aerodynamic ring design and runs on technology found in fuel-injection systems and turbochargers in sports cars.

It produces a breeze that is more even than that produced by bladed fans, which tends to be choppy, said British appliance maker Dyson.

The fan draws in air from its base using a motor and pushes it out through its ring structure. This creates negative pressure that sucks in air around the ring to produce a steady breeze in one direction.

Table-top models of the fan have been available at major electronics stores in Singapore since last month. The designer fan costs $399, compared to standard fans, which go for around $100.

Larger Dyson fans at $699 will hit the stores next month. The company said yesterday that it is setting up a multi-million- dollar design centre in Singapore early next year.

It will hire more than 200 new staff, including engineers, on top of its existing team here. The current office, set up in 2004 and with 30 employees now, designed the motors in Dyson’s hand-held vacuum cleaners.
