The company that changed the world of video games with touch-screen gaming in 2004 and motion-controlled gaming in 2006 now pioneers the next dimensional shift. With the announcement of the Nintendo 3DS, Nintendo introduces portable entertainment in 3D without the need for special glasses. Nintendo 3DS includes two screens. The bottom touch screen makes use of a telescoping stylus that is stored in the unit itself. The top screen displays 3D visuals to the naked eye. The system also has a 3D Depth Slider that lets players select the level of 3D they enjoy the most. The 3D effect can be ratcheted up to the highest level, scaled back to a more moderate setting or even turned off completely. In addition to the familiar + Control Pad and button controls found on previous Nintendo hand-helds, Nintendo 3DS now also includes a Circle Pad, which provides a full 360 degrees of direction, giving it the freedom and precision needed to play games in 3D worlds. A built-in motion sensor and gyro sensor can react to the motion and tilt of the system, so whether players are twisting their systems side to side or moving them up and down, their motion-compatible Nintendo 3DS games respond instantly. Each Nintendo 3DS system comes pre-loaded with a variety of fun games, applications and features, such as Nintendo 3DS Camera. One camera points at the user, while two additional cameras point outward. These two outer cameras take photos in 3D. The fun, built-in game "Face Raiders" asks users to shoot at funny depictions of their own faces. Nintendo 3DS, when put into Sleep Mode, can act as a pedometer, while letting users earn Play Coins for the steps they take that can then be traded in for additional content in compatible games and applications. By accessing the Activity Log, users can check their steps as well as their play time. With Nintendo 3DS Sound, users can enjoy sound-manipulation tools or rock out while listening to their MP3 or AAC music files.

Nintendo 3DS offers a whopping 18 games

NINTENDO’S upcoming 3DS gaming system will have a whopping 18 games when it is launched next month, said PC World.

Slated for a March 27 release, the 3DS will offer gamers the option of purchasing three Nintendo-published games for US$39.99 (S$51) each, comprising Pilotwings Resort, Steel Diver, and nintendogs + cats, said PC World.

Pilotwings Resort is an aerial adventure in which players soar over the tropical Wuhu Island in 3-D,  completing missions and snapping pictures.

Steel Diver is a strategy and combat game set in a submarine. Nintendo said the 3-D technology makes players feel like they are looking into a mini-aquarium as they control the sub.

Meanwhile, nintendogs + cats might just be perfect for Singaporeans longing for a puppy or kitten, but who just don’t have the time for them.

There are three versions, which will have players interacting with realistic dogs and cats.

Each game can unlock more than 20 breeds, said PC World.

Other gaming options from third-party publishers include Super Street Fighter 3D Edition, The Sims 3, and Lego Star Wars III: The Clone Wars.

“Seeing 3-D visuals without the need for special glasses is just one aspect of Nintendo 3DS,” Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime said in a statement.

“The real test of any system is whether the games and applications draw you in and keep you engaged.”

All-new’ 3-D experience with 3DS

PROMISING to usher in a new era in 3-D entertainment, Nintendo has said  its glasses-free, handheld 3DS will go on sale on March 27 in the United States for US$250 (S$322).

That is the same price that the revolutionary Wii console cost when it went on sale in 2006.

Said Mr Reggie Fils-Aime, president and chief operating officer of Nintendo of America: “This is a different kind of 3-D. Something you haven’t experienced before. Not in theatres, not at trade shows.”

The gadget features a touchscreen on the bottom and a 3-D screen on top. It has three cameras, one facing the user and two facing outwards. The latter two let you take 3-D photos, which can be displayed instantly on the screen.

There is also an accelerometer and a gyroscope. These track players’ movements and how they tilt the screen, so they can play games with motion-based capabilities or see 3-D games from different angles.

A Mii Creator uses photos that players take of themselves to instantly create a cartoon avatar based on their images.

The 3DS includes new social features, including StreetPass, which lets users exchange game information with other 3DS users nearby. For example, the Mii avatar or game high scores can appear on a user’s friends’ 3DS if they have also chosen to activate this feature.

Nintendo said more than 30 games will be available for the 3DS by early June.

Games will range from Nintendogs + Cats, which adds feline companions to the popular puppy simulator, to The Legend Of Zelda: Ocarina Of Time 3D, to 3-D versions of EA’s Madden NFL Football and Capcom’s Resident Evil: The Mercenaries.

Older games, including those for the original Game Boy, will be available for download.

The 3DS will be available in black and shiny aqua blue. It can play games from older DS systems, but those will not be in 3-D.

The 3-D gradient is adjustable on the 3DS, or it can be turned off completely. If the user’s eyes do not adjust to the 3-D screen immediately, it helps to start the games in 2-D mode, and then slowly turn up the 3-D
slider.

Nintendo recommends that children aged six or younger should not play 3-D games, as these could affect the development of their vision. This is similar to warnings issued by makers of other 3-D products.

But the American Academy of Ophthalmology said there are currently no conclusive studies on the short- or long-term effects of 3-D products on children’s eye development or vision health.
