Chrome OS tablet from HTC ‘on sale in Nov’

BOSTON

AN HTC tablet running Google’s Chrome operating system will be sold by Verizon Wireless in late November, according to an unnamed source cited by the blog Downloadsquad, Computerworld reported.

The blog’s source specifically said the tablet will appear on Black Friday, the day after Thanksgiving and the traditional start of the United States’ holiday shopping season. The blog said the tablet would probably
be heavily subsidised by Verizon to compete against the Apple iPad.

HTC and Verizon could not be reached for comment. The blog also speculated that the HTC tablet would have plenty of popular features, in keeping with HTC’s Nexus One smartphone tradition.

Those include a 1280x720 multitouch display, 2GB of RAM and a minimum of 32GB of storage, the blog said.

But the big-interest value would be the Chrome OS, since Google has mostly made a splash with Android for smartphones and a number of Android tablets are expected in the coming months from Samsung and others.

Samsung is reported to be showing a new Android 2.2 tablet at a consumer-electronics show in Berlin early next month.

FierceWireless reported last month that an HTC spokesman had noted widespread interest in tablets, but said HTC would participate if it could find a way to offer “clear value and differentiate ourselves”.

Chrome was introduced as an OS to power netbooks, not tablets, although some analysts have noted that Chrome could work in both.

A feature-packed phone named Desire

BY YEONG AH SENG

HTC Desire smartphone FROYO, the latest version (2.2) of the Android operating system for mobile phones, was in the news last week.

Its many new features fuelled talk that the iPhone was finally on the ropes. But we all know that an OS is only as good as the phone running it: If the superior features of the OS are clearly evident on a good phone, there will be no shortage of adopters.

In HTC, Android may have found a perfect match. HTC made the first commercially
available Android phone, the Dream.

It has also come up with a number of successors – the Magic, Hero and Legend.

The latest, Desire, is a better version of the Google Nexus One Android phone, with optical tracking instead of a trackball.

Although it is loaded with Version 2.1 (Eclair) of the Android OS, it nonetheless demonstrates the best of what the system has to offer.

The fast (1GHz) Snapdragon CPU, the crisp and sharp 3.7- inch Amoled screen, HTC’s
Sense (a proprietary user interface) and the 5-megapixel camera all add up to a very fast and feature-filled phone that is in many ways superior to the iPhone.

One wonders what an HTC Desire, when loaded with Froyo, would be like. For Apple, it is perhaps time to perform a reality check. How much: $898, without plan
