The Linksys E4200 Maximum Performance Wireless-N Router by Cisco is a dual-band router that provides an excellent wireless surfing experience while remaining user-friendly.

The E4200 is a sleek and lightweight device, built with internal antennas - to keep its svelte silhouette. It houses four gigabit ports on the back, so that other devices like media players and game consoles can be connected, with a USB port which can be used to connect a hard drive to add storage capacity to the network.

On its front, the E4200 does not have the usual set of status lights. Instead, it has a Cisco logo, which pulses white when the E4200 is starting up, or if it has encountered a problem, and glows steadily when everything is running smoothly.

Setting up the E4200 is a simple, quick affair and can be done on both the Windows and Mac OS. The E4200 comes with a quick installation guide and a start up CD-ROM, which contains Cisco Connect.

Cisco Connect guides users in both physically setting up the router, and to get the network recognised on their computers. The settings on the E4200 can also be tweaked through Cisco Connect.

The router has two separate access points, a 2.4 GHz and a 5 GHz band. The 2.4 GHz band offers up to 300 Mbps wireless speed, while the 5 GHz band offers a more powerful wireless speed of up to 450 Mbps. These two bands work simultaneously and, upon initial installation, they are set up as one combined wireless network with one user ID and password.

The E4200 has excellent wireless connectivity and range, and both bands performed exceptionally well while a file was downloading at a distance of about 20 metres with two walls in between.

Playing online games was lag-free and fast, even with a game console and a computer connected to the E4200.

With extensive testing over four days, the E4200 did not disconnect at all despite heavy network usage for video streaming, downloads and online gaming.

It should be noted that the E4200 tends to get warm fairly quickly. It felt warm to the touch within 30 minutes after it was turned on but does not overheat even after extended usage. The only other problem with the E4200 is a small one - its power supply comes from a bulky AC adaptor that dwarfs the sleek device.

Overall, the E4200 provides powerful wireless speeds and a reliable performance. Setting it up is easy, and the guide in Cisco Connect ensures that everyone who can use a computer will have no problem getting the E4200 up and running in a few minutes.

In terms of performance, the E4200 offers a great solution to connect your devices, and its sleek design makes it a great conversation piece.

TOKYO - Sony launched its first tablet computers in an ambitious attempt to grab the second spot in the market more than a year after Apple's iPad revolutionised mobile computing.

The gadgets will use an operating system based on Google's Android 3.0, said Mr Kunimasa Suzuki, deputy president of the consumer products and services group.

These will be the first tablets to enable the use of PlayStation games, said Mr Suzuki, who produced one of the glossy black devices from his jacket pocket during a media launch yesterday.

Mr Suzuki raised eyebrows in January when he told reporters at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas that Sony was aiming for the No 2 spot in the tablet market within a year even though it had yet to put a product on the market.

"That effectively means they have to beat Samsung, which is a very tough rival," said Mr Nobuo Kurahashi, an analyst at Mizuho Investors Securities in Tokyo. "Although this is an interesting product, they have already been left behind in televisions, so it's not going to be easy."

Sony's Kazuo Hirai, seen as a likely successor to CEO Howard Stringer, made his first public appearance yesterday after the company promoted the gaming division chief to the No 2 position last month.

Sales of tablet devices are expected to quadruple to about 294 million units between this year and 2015, with almost half that Android-based, research firm Gartner has forecast.

Sony's tablets, code-named S1 and S2, are WiFi and 3G/4G-compatible. S1 has a 9.4-inch display and is designed to make it easier to hold for long periods of time, Sony said. The S2 has two 5.5-inch displays in a clamshell design.

The company, which had been criticised for failing to come up with a tablet offering after iPad's launch in April last year, has emphasised the need to differentiate its tablet from rivals, even if that takes time.

"Although it's a latecomer in the market, it has potential as what you need is just one big uniqueness that can sell to customers - be it design or whatever," said analyst Lee Sun Tae from Meritz Securities in Seoul.

"By the same token, it can be just ... another Android gadget flooding the market amid intensifying competition."

In a bid to tap burgeoning demand, competitors including Samsung Electronics - whose Galaxy Tab is Apple's strongest competitor in the tablet market - Motorola, LG Electronics and HTC are flooding the market with tablets running Android.

Looking for a fuss-free camcorder? How about a hands-free one you can wear on your ear, and is always recording, like Looxcie? It also allows you to post 30-second clips to social networks at the press of a button - fun for those who love sharing their lives online.

The concept may seem strange at first but makes sense for those who want to record and share interesting moments as they happen - the clips effectively let you capture these experiences for posterity.

The wearable camcorder works with two mobile apps, which are available for Android and iOS, LooxcieMoments and LooxcieCam. LooxcieMoments (or Looxcie for Android) acts as a viewfinder and allows you to quickly create and share clips via email, Facebook, YouTube or Twitter. It can record up to five hours of continuous footage at 240p and 15 frames per second (fps), and clocks four hours of battery life for the camcorder.

With LooxcieCam, you get higher-resolution videos. It records and saves up to one hour of continuous video at 480p resolution and 30 fps. When working with this app, Looxcie can last for two hours. The apps are compatible with Android version 2.0 and higher, and iOS 4.3 and higher. A new app slated for release in the next few months - LooxcieLive - will go one step further to stream live video across mobile networks and Wi-Fi to single or multiple viewers.

People have used it as a hands-free recording tool to capture precious moments with their newborn baby. You could also use it to record lectures or interviews - just make sure people know they are being filmed if they are not close enough to see the red recording light. Sports enthusiasts could use the footage to improve their game, too.

The Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc is a pretty looking device, with an eye-catching 4.2-inch extra wide display housed in a sleekly-designed body, with just 8.7mm at its thinnest point.

The phone has a micro-HDMI jack placed next to the power button on the top. This port can be used to stream photos and videos straight to your high-definition television, using the cable that comes in the box.

The Xperia Arc has a multi-touch screen that boasts Reality Display powered by the Mobile BRAVIA Engine. Similar to the technology behind Sony's Bravia television, the engine enhances colour and detail for crisp display.

The engine manages sharpness, colour and contrast in real time, optimising viewing options for all types of multimedia. The display is constantly clear and bright, and looks especially impressive when viewing photos and videos taken in high definition (HD).

The size of the screen also makes it great for reading, editing photos and playing games on the phone.

The 8.1-megapixel camera allows excellent photo and video options. With a wide range of shooting options, it is able to produce high-quality results even in dim lighting. Shooting in low light is a delight thanks to its built-in Sony's Exmor R sensor, which is twice as light sensitive as conventional sensors.

The lens itself has an aperture of f/2.4, which allows more light to filter into the sensor. Pictures shot in low-light conditions turn out well when the Exmor R sensor and wide aperture are used together. If natural light is not your style, the LED flash can be used as additional light source.

The phone camera is also able to capture HD (720p) videos, which display sharp detail and vibrant colours - especially when viewed on the Xperia Arc's display screen.

The built-in speaker of the Xperia Arc does a good job and delivers a more impressive experience than the earphones that come with the phone.

The Xperia Arc is powered by the latest Android 2.3 - or Gingerbread - and comes preloaded with useful apps, including ShowNearby for Sony Ericsson, which allows for customised searches such as cinemas or ATMs nearby, with bus schedules and weather condition updates at the touch of a button.

The Xperia Arc also has great social networking skills with Timescape. Through Timescape, all social updates on Facebook or Twitter are grouped under each contact for easy viewing.

But all its capabilities and features drain the battery life quickly - especially if run at the same time - and the phone has to be charged daily on heavy usage. Another grouse we had was with the snail-paced start up time. It took nearly 20 seconds to boot up.

Overall, the Xperia Arc is an outstanding phone for anyone who wants a complete multimedia experience, with a powerful operating system and social network capabilities, all encased in a sleek, lightweight body.
