Xbox 360 Kinect Game Review: MotionSports

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars

MotionSports X360There is a small degree of similarity between Kinect Sports and MotionSports for the Xbox360, yet both promise a unique experience. Like Kinect Sports, MotionSports offers six sports genres to try your hand at: Skiing, soccer, football, horseback riding, boxing and hang-gliding.

Although Kinect Sports offers boxing and football as well, the gameplay between titles for both games is fairly different. I suspect there'll be a little confusion between "soccer" and "football" (which we know as American football) for some, but a glance at the cover image should clear things up straight away.

Once you load the game, an eager male announcer voice welcomes you and takes you through some calibration exercises. Here you are requested for three specific poses for capture - but rather than follow instructions, just strike any pose you want, the sillier the better. You'll know what they're for eventually ...

From the main menu, you can choose to try out the six sports genres in any order. Within skiing, there are a few events focussing on different segments of the sport, with ski jumping the most fun option.

In the Soccer module, you're placed in the shoes of a goalkeeper or a striker and you take turns to deny and score shots, with some challenges thrown in. Instead of a direct representation of your movement, gameplay is relegated to a "choose direction of reaction" format before the animation sets in.

Boxing will have you go head-to-head with an opponent. The game doesn't allow you to rush in with jabs - you can only throw a powerful blow after a series of successful parry moves.

Horseback riding is rarely included in many sports games so it's a welcome addition here. Gameplay is simple; you basically lead your horse through a series of obstacles.

Hang-gliding is my favourite module, because it allows you to glide through locations like canyons and a city while attempting to catch updrafts to glide further and satisfy challenges, before attempting to land on the bullseye.

While you can play these games with up to three friends in the same room by taking turns, some have competitive modes for two. The controls are pretty intuitive, though not always consistent. At times, your motions just fail to register and you'll have you retry a game over and over.

Still, glitches aside, MotionSports is still a worthy purchase among the current limited selection of titles.

VERDICT

MotionSports is a nice alternative to Kinect Sports, and makes clever use of the camera features of the Kinect sensor.

The TG-610's retail price is yet to be announced.

Clip it onto the wristband and you have a music-playing, pedometer-capable touchscreen watch.

FOR THE DATE

You can wear the right things and say the right words, but if the ambience isn't romantic enough, you may not have a happy ending to your date. Here's where the Philips Fidelio Docking Speaker DS9000 made for the iPhone and iPod comes in.

The speaker system is based on a two-way acoustic system, revolving around the speaker's architecture and isolated acoustic chambers. The DS9000 produces strong and rich bass thanks to its bass management technology, which Philips claims delivers low tones without any distortion even at the highest volumes.

Printer Review: Fuji Xerox DocuPrint P205b (Pink)

The pink printer

Printer Review: Fuji Xerox DocuPrint P205b (Pink)

by Trevor Tan
05:55 AM Feb 25, 2011

PRINTERS usually come in boring shades: Think beige, grey or black.

How about trying a pink one on for size? The Fuji Xerox DocuPrint P205b ($169) is the first monochrome laser printer in Singapore to be available in pink. Going pink comes at a premium, too - it costs $30 more than the light quartz version. And why not? Just ask my wife, who loves the shade of pink on the printer.

Although the P205b is quite compact at 358x198x209mm, the paper tray - which you need to extend for the printer to work - almost doubles its desktop footprint. Ensure you've got the desktop real estate for the printer, and you will realise it's more than just a pretty face.

The printer features Fuji Xerox's self-scanning light emitting diode and digitally enhanced lighting control imaging system technologies with 64MB of built-in memory, and gives you 1200x1200 dpi printouts at up to 24 pages (up to A4) per minute.

Setup is pretty easy. Plug in the power cord, hook it to your computer via the USB cable, install the drivers (available in both Mac and Windows), and the printer is ready to use.

When I first powered up the P205b, it took around 20 seconds before it was ready to go. The first printout of a 46KB Word document took 11 seconds. Subsequently, the same document took less than five seconds to print.

Even a 1.55MB Word document only took around 10 seconds to print, from the time I clicked print to the moment the finished page nestled in the tray. A 2.6MB JPEG monochrome photo took 14 seconds. When compared with the same photo I churned out on my personal monochrome laser printer (priced similarly to the P205b), the P205b's printout looks much sharper and exhibits more details.

The Fuji Xerox DocuPrint P205b's speed and printout quality is definitely great value for money.

From now until March 31, for every pink P205b sold, Fuji Xerox will donate $10 to the Star Shelter, which provides temporary refuge to women and children victims of domestic violence. In a concurrent Valentine's Day promotion from Jan 28 to March 6, with every purchase of the pink P205b, you can either send your beloved a bouquet of flowers or receive a $55 Pink Palour voucher.

Earphones Review: Jays a-Jays Four

Built Four your iPhone

Earphones Review: Jays a-Jays Four

by Trevor Tan

05:55 AM Feb 25, 2011

JAYS a-JAYS Four iPhone Earphones with Mic/Remote (Black Rubber Coated /Metal Finish)ARE you one of the many users frustrated by the limitations of the earphones bundled with your iPhone or iPod? The latest Jays earphones, the a-Jays Four, might be what you are looking for.

At 115cm long, it is neither too long nor too short. Not only does it look cool with its stealthy black finish, its flat tangle-free cable and a unique L-shape plug also allows you to put it in your pocket without fear of entanglement.

It comes with five silicone ear tips of different sizes, so one of them will surely fit your ears comfortably.

Plus, the a-Jays Four is equipped with a minimalist-looking remote and microphone with three soft-touch buttons that allow you to control the volume and answer calls. Voice reception is clear on both ends of the conversation - in fact, clearer than using the phone itself.

Not only can you use a-Jays Four's remote on the iPhone (3GS and later) and newer iPods, you can also use it on the Apple MacBook, MacBook Pro and Mac Pro (2009 generation). Audio is supported on any music device that has a generic 3.5mm stereo port. The sound quality is superb, with solid bass that does not overpower. The mid-tones are warm and fluid with the highs holding well.

Compared with Apple's $128 In-Ear Headphones with Remote and Mic, the a-Jays Four ($118 with a two-year warranty) actually seems reasonably priced, considering its superiority in both build and sound quality. Trevor Tan

Tech Toy Review: Parrot AR.Drone

Polly wants a quadricopter

Tech Toy Review: Parrot AR.Drone

by May Chua

Updated 01:25 PM Feb 25, 2011

Parrot AR.Drone Quadricopter Controlled by iPhone/iPod touch/iPad (Orange/Blue)NEED a spanking new tech toy to distract yourself until the new Apple iPad lands in your hands? Check out the Parrot AR.Drone ($449).

The AR.Drone is a lightweight quadricopter that you can control with a free app on the iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad. Think of it as a souped-up, remote-controlled helicopter.

The drone creates its own WiFi hotspot. Once you've connected to that using your iOS device, just install the free app and launch it to start playing.

The basics of flight control are easy enough to master. There are two ways to control the drone: Place your thumb over the left button and use your iOS device as a steering wheel, or use the right button as a directional pad. A handy button at the bottom of the screen allows you to instruct the drone to land on its own.

You can fly it indoors and outdoors - we prefer indoors, where the wind is less of a factor.

Once you encounter anything stronger than a light wind, the drone becomes more difficult to control. Here's where the autopilot swoops in to save the day. When the drone is dangerously close to an obstacle, just let go of the button and it will attempt to stabilise itself and hover on the spot. It works most of the time.

We initially expected the 15-minute battery life to be a dampener, but ultimately found it better than expected. Even with constant airtime, it typically lasted longer than 15 minutes.

The quadricopter can soar to a maximum height of 50 metres - an impressive sight. However, beware of flying it too high when you are near a forested area; during one test flight, the toy nearly got stuck in a tree. Oops.

There are two cameras on the AR.Drone, one at its front and another underneath it. The video feeds are streamed back to your iPhone. If you have two drones or more, you can play augmented reality (AR) games. So far, however, only one official game app is available for the AR.Drone: AR Pursuit (US$2.99), which allows you to shoot virtual missiles at other drones. We did not get the chance to play it as we had only one review unit. The YouTube videos and game trailers looked promising, though.

This toy hit the shelves last month and has sold several hundred units so far. No models or updates are planned for now, though an Android app is in the works. It is expected to be out in a few months' time.

Though we would prefer the AR.Drone to be more wind-resistant, it still makes a cool toy for both adults and children past the destructive age. May Chua

Gaming Peripherals Review: Razer Tron Gaming Mouse and Mat

The blue glow of satisfaction

Gaming Peripherals Review: Razer Tron Gaming Mouse and Mat

by Trevor Tan

Updated 03:00 PM Feb 23, 2011

Razer TRON Gaming MouseADMIT it. If you're a Tron fan, you're most likely a geek. So it make sense that a slew of Tron gadgets, such as Razer's Tron Gaming Mouse and Mat, have followed in the wake of the movie.

The Tron Gaming Mouse is equipped with seven customisable buttons, 2.1-metre braided cable and a 5600dpi 3.5G laser sensor, which means this mouse is seven times faster than your normal optical mouse.

The mouse comes in a cool stealthy black ambidextrous design with Tron-inspired luminescent blue lines running along its glossy top. The side buttons are readily accessible on both sides of the mouse. Since it is a symmetrical design, it is a lefty-friendly mouse too.

Razer TRON Gaming Mouse and Mousepad BundleWhen you plug it in, the Tron-licensed "Rez & De-Rez" sound effects and illuminating blue glow will immediately put a smile on that geeky face of yours.

With the mouse drivers, you can assign all the buttons and scroll wheel to perform any function you desire the button, from changing sensitivity on the fly to assigning gaming macros. However, as of press time there are only Windows drivers - no Mac OS X drivers.

The Tron Gaming Mat matches the Tron gaming mouse in both looks and precision. Wielding the mouse on this hard gaming mat means your cursor stops precisely where you want it to stop.

Switch off the lights and the gaming mat actually glows a faint blue. Swipe the Tron Gaming Mouse over it and it leaves a bioluminescent trail on the mat. Cheap thrill, you say? Maybe - but it's still awesome. Not that you'll have time to stop and admire it during a gaming session.

I played a host of games - from first-person shooter Call Of Duty: Black Ops to turn-based strategy game Civilisation V - with the Tron mouse on the Tron mat, and the experience was impeccable, with precise aim and movements.

However, I found using the mouse tired my palm after a while, as I prefer to rest my palm on the mouse's tail (aka the palm grip). The Tron mouse is slightly smaller and shorter than Razer's other top-notch gaming mice such as Lachesis, so it is more suitable for gamers who prefer a claw or fingertip mouse grip.

At $199.90, the Razer Tron Gaming Mouse and Mat bundle is certainly not cheap. Nevertheless, the performance and looks of this duo would probably be worth every cent to died-in-the-wool Tron fanatics.

Now if you'd excuse me, I'm busy admiring the glowing trails my mouse is making.

Laptop Review: Lenovo IdeaPad U260

Looks are everything

Laptop Review: Lenovo IdeaPad U260

Lenovo IdeaPad U260 08763CU 12.5-Inch Ultraportable Laptop (Mocha Brown)THE Lenovo IdeaPad U260 is for those who appreciate beauty rather than brawn.

At first glance, the U260 seems like it could pose a challenge to Apple's MacBook Air. It felt really light in my hands, weighing in at just 1.35kg, and fit perfectly in a small bag.

I was afraid its petite nature would affect the display, but found the size of the screen just nice - you won't have to squint while reading. The high-definition (HD) screen has decent colour contrast, while its matte display effectively reduces glare even when used in bright areas.

Lenovo IdeaPad U260 08763AU 12.5-Inch Ultraportable Laptop (Clementine Orange)Adding to the feeling of a classy package is its minimalist but appealing design, with nice touches in its magnesium-aluminium body and leather palm rest. It looks like Lenovo was going all the way when designing this one.

Not that it's just about the looks. The U260 is more than capable of handling most tasks, with the processor running quite fast without noticeable lag during testing, and never getting particularly hot to the touch.

The glass touch pad is responsive and smooth, and large enough to support the multi-touch functions. The "island-style" keyboard - like a Mac, with each key separate - is wonderfully tactile.

Still, the U260 does have its drawbacks. It seems that in following the design of the MacBook Air, Lenovo's offering also incurs similar drawbacks, such as its unreachable, irreplaceable battery. It doesn't help that the battery only lasts for about three-and-a-half hours.

Lenovo IdeaPad U260 08763BU 12.5-Inch Ultraportable Laptop (Mocha Brown)It is also rather surprising that the laptop only comes with two USB ports instead of three when it clearly has the space for it. Neither does it have an SD card slot - a pain if you take a lot of photos.

On the whole, while it might leave hardcore gamers and other heavy users underwhelmed, it is a good catch for most typical users. And a very pretty one at that. Hazwan Norly
